Abstract:
The study investigated communication as predictors of marital harmony among teachers in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State, Nigeria. Correlational research design was adopted for the study. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The population of the study comprised all the married public senior secondary school teachers in Rivers State, totaling 6,174 with a sample size of 366 secondary school teachers drawn using Fluid survey online calculator. Multi-stage procedure was used for the study. two self-constructed instruments titled: “Communication Scale (CS) and Marital Harmony Scale (MHS) were used to collect data. The instruments CS and MHS were validated by the two experts in Guidance and Counselling, in the Department of Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling. The reliability of the instruments was determined using Cronbach alpha reliability method that yielded the following reliability indices: CS = .85 and MHS = .87 respectively. However, the reliability coefficients of the subscales were also obtained. Simple regression analysis was used to answer the research questions and test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance using SPSS version 25. The result of the study showed that: couples spending quality time together and verbal communication positively and significantly predicted the marital harmony of teachers in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that poor communication skills and who does not spend quality time together should be encouraged to go for marriage counselling amongst others.
